Domain Flipping 2016 : The Ultimate Guide
Making money by flipping domains in 2016 become very popular.
In fact, I receive hundreds of e-mails from readers with questions like :
” What is domain name flipping ? “
” Can I make money flipping domains ? ”
” How easy it is to buy and sell domains for profits ?”
Well, let me clear things up for you.
In this post you will learn how you can make money flipping domains in 2016.
Here’s what you’re going to learn :
- Definitions of domain and domain flipping - what do they even mean?
- How I made quick money flipping domains, and how can you ?
- How to estimate domains value? so you’ll know how much money each domain name is worth.
- Where can you buy domain names ?
- Where can you sell domains ?
Lets start by giving some definitions.
1. Definitions : What Are Domains, And What is Domain Flipping ?
What are domains ?
A domain name is a human-friendly address.
The Web is built on I.P Addresses : pretty much “strings” of random numbers, that are hosting a website.
Here’s an example - 74.125.157.99 is an IP address for “Google”.
To make the internet more “user - friendly” we use domain names, which are words, instead of typing long strings of random numbers all day.
So instead of typing ” 74.125.157.99 ” you would simply just type “Google.Com” in order to get to google’s website.
A domain is made up of anywhere from 1 to 64 characters, numbers and hyphens followed
by the domain extension (TLD).
What is domain flipping ?
Domain flipping, is buying domains that are priced low / buying domains and adding value to them, then selling them for a higher price .
There are Two Main Strategies to Flip Domain Names -
1. Buy & Sell : Buying domains that are under-estimated [ back-orders, expired] for a low price, and sell it for a higher price to someone that will need that domain.
2. Buy the domain -> Add Value -> Sell : Buying a domain name, getting more backlinks and adding value to it or even developing a website on that domain and then sell.
2. How Did I Make Quick Money Flipping Domain Names ?
Just like you, I was looking for quick ways to make money online.
It all started when I read a book about real estate and house flipping, and loved the idea.
It made me think about the whole concept of buying and selling…
What if I can buy quality domain names for cheap, and resell them for a higher price?
All I needed was :
- a good domain name for a cheap price
- a buyer that is willing to pay more for the domain name.
Simple, right? it is.
My First Domain Name Flip - $631 Net Profit
I went and bought expired domains [ domains that people owned, worked on, and failed to re-new], listed them on Flippa, and waited…
Some domain names sold pretty quick, while others didn’t.
I learned pretty fast what domain names people are looking for, and which ones to avoid.
The first domain name that made me serious profit was PokerTutorial.net.
I remember I saw it became available for just $69 on SnapNames.com, and I immidiately grabbed it !
3 days later, I sold it for $700 to a guy who owned a poker website…
That’s $631 in net profit, with a few mouse clicks. I didn’t add any value to this domain !
I was stocked ! and decided to keep looking for domain names to flip.
3. How to Estimate Domain Names ?
That’s the tricky part, i’ll be honest.
This part is where you make / lose money on your domain, so you gotta be careful !
Obviously, the value of a domain depends on what it’s worth to the buyer.
But if you’re just starting with domain name flipping, I would suggest you stick these rules of thumb.
There are 2 aspects to examine when estimating a domain name.
First one, is the domain’s “name” ( i.e “BigBucksBlogger” ) and the second, is the SEO perspective of the domain.
First Aspect - Valuable Domain ‘Names’ :
- XXX or XXXX Domain Names - these are extremely valuable, usually will be used for a brand name.
- One or Two Keywords That Have a Meaning - MakeMoney, FashionBlog , PokerTutorial, BakeBread ( sometimes 3 words can work as well, but its less valuable)
These are related to the “name” of the domain name.
But domain-names have much more into them then their formal “name”.
Some domain names are extremely valuable because of their “SEO” aspect -
Second Aspect - Domains’ SEO :
- What is the Domains TLD? - top-level domain : .com ? .net ? .org? I usually stick to .com, they are the most powerful ones.
- Domains CPC ? - cost-per-click, how much people pay to advertise in that specific keyword ?
- Domains DA - Domain name’s age how old is the domain ?
- Domains Exact Searches Per Month - how many searches the keyword in the domain name has ?
- Domains Backlinks - how many sites link to the domain ?
Confused ? Don’t be.
If you’re just starting out, stick to domains that have a good “name” to them.
These are almost always guarantee money-makers.
Look at the first aspect again.
Find domains that have meanings to them…
My first flip was PokerTutorial.net, I didn’t check the domain’s SEO at all…
I just saw a domain named ” Poker - Tutorial ” and thought to myself : ” well, that kind of domain must have a high value to someone who is in the poker - niche “. I was right.
So when you are looking at domain names to flip, and see a domain name like : ” FitnessGuide.com “,
Would you think someone will pay more than the few dollars you’re paying to renew the domain ? probably.
Now that we covered the domain value part, lets talk about where to buy and sell domain names.
4.Where Can You Buy Domain Names ?
There are plenty of place to buy domains.
Here Are My Favorite Places To Buy Domain Names :
One of my favorite places to buy valuable domains FreshDrop.
If you haven’t heard about it, FreshDrop is a domain name search engine that has a database of expired domains from all the biggest websites.
You can get a FREE 7 day trial to FreshDrop - by clicking here.
Another great place to buy domains is expireddomains.net.
Or if you have patience and creativity, you can actually register new domains at godaddy.com, it might take time until you find a name that isn’t taken and is valuable, but it’s definitely possible !
Another great places to look for under-valued domain names is online forums.
DigitalPointForum.com for instance, has a domain marketplace.
You can find domains for sell by owners and directly negotiate with them.
So you bought your domain names and are ready to make some money !
But where do you find the right buyer for your domain ?
5.Where Can You Sell Domain Names ?
Everywhere.
There are so many ways and marketplaces to sell your domains at.
First, you can list them for sell at SEDO.com or at Godaddy’s auctions.
Second, there are a lot of forums where you can sell your domains as well as buy them.
Third, contact web owners that already have a domain name similar to yours, and offer them your domain name.
One of my favorite marketplaces is Flippa.com.
If you want to make the most out of your domain, use the third way.
I’ll explain how :
If you bought “PokerTutorial.com” , google the word ” poker tutorial” and see what comes up.
E-mail the first 5 websites something like : ” I own poker tutorial.com and am willing to sell it, would you be interested ? I think this domain will give a lot of value to your website ” , and it sure would give them value.
That way I personally got higher offers than listing on general marketplaces like flippa, for obvious reasons.
Think about it, if you owned a food blog, and your domain name is : foodblog.net.
When someone e-mails you with the domain name : FoodBlog.com, would you be interested to buy it?
You probably would.
SOLD ? Great ! Now You Have To Transfer The Domain Name To The Buyers Account.
Transferring your domain name into the buyers account is pretty simple, and depends on your domain’s registrar.
Most domain registrars have a very friendly system that will guide you on how to do that, and if you still encounter problems,
just contact their support !
