Lucia’s Linky Love for WP 2.3:
Option to follow trackback immediately.
Option to follow trackback immediately.
I’ve updated Lucia’s Linky Love for WP 2.3. Sort of. It turned out the plugin already worked for WP 2.3. However, I did make a two mods at user request:
- Josh Spaulding requested the ability to dofollow trackbacks immediately. That function now exists.
- Tricia identified a bug that appeared to sometimes occur when people left “names” with apostrophe (that is “‘”) in them. I think I coded corrected.
If you’d like the new version, download Lucia’s Linky Love for WP 2.3. Unzip. Place in plugin folder. Deactivate the old version, activate this one.
If you notice any problems, let me know so I can fix.
A word or caution
Trackback spam can be particularly pesky. I have seen a rash of semi-innocent looking scraper blogs that post snippets of your content. I call these Daegan Spam. If you keep those trackbacks and visit later, you will notice the blogs get redirected to irrelevant thin-affiliate sites for commercial products. This causes you to link into a “bad neighborhood”, which is a bad thing.
I’m planning a tool to help us find these things months later, “just in case”, but haven’t thought through the best way to do it yet.
Meanwhile, be very vigilant about trackback spam. When in doubt delete.
In the “irony” department
I found a bug in “Hide Sponsored Categories Plugins” for 2.3. It only happens for categories that have apostrophe’s in their name. I have such a category. It’s the one for “Lucia’s Linky Love!” So, I’m currently running the old version. Needless to say, I’ll be fixing that bug! ![]()

Thanks alot for helping me, and others, out with this
LLL was already great, but now it’s just awesome.
You’re right about the trackback spam. I’m seen these moron’s blogs. I think it’s important to keep a very close eye on these and all comments. For those who don’t, probably shouldn’t use the new option.
Thanks again, much appreciated! You’ll be seeing a trackback coming in yourself in a few hours.

I get a lot of trackback spam on my main blog which isn’t much of an issue, I just put it all into Akismet. However we just launched a new blog called scam warning which posts scam letters from scammers all over the world - the idea is people search for their scammers name, email address or other info contained in the scam letter and find out that it is a scam.
This daegan spam is taking scam letters from our blog and putting them onto blogs which don’t have all the warnings that our blog does.
I’m feeling a bit worried about it. Though in their post it always links back to our site and the site is called scam warning it may not be enough to stop someone getting scammed.
Any ideas, Lucia? Here’s an example of what I’m seeing, I took the links out for obvious reasons.

@Snoskred :
Obviously, you do report these to Akismet. That reduces the incentive for the scrappers to do what they are doing.
The difficulty is getting this stuff taken down. If the blog is doing full scale copying, you can issue take down notices (which is a pain in the neck.) Because full scale copying is a copyright violation, you’ll eventually prevail and the stuff will get taken down.
I don’t actually know what you can do when they publish snippets only. You can obviously send a take down notice and see if it works. Fighting the take down notice is work for them, so they probably will.
Unfortunately, a different spammer will spring up and start scrapping. So you really need to decide what’s worth your time.
In your specific instance, you might also want to see which bits of your text the actually pick up and make sure the text includes “scam warning”. I notice the spammers usually pick up the title, so including it there might work.
You could use some divs in your CSS to hide up specific text like alexa does for their URLs. So every now and they they’d get the text “Stolen from xxx.com” Problem is it’d not let regular users copy it either

Hi Lucia, love the plugin!
Would it be possible to have a style element added to the commenter’s number of comments so blog owners can style it?
e.g…. View source of commenter’s name, etc.
