NoOldSpamLinks Plugin: Version 0.2?

My reward for posting my bare bones version of my “NoOldSpamLinks” plugin was a few “atta girls” and some very good suggestions! I implemented the easy ones, and so now runVersion 0.2 of NoOldSpamLinks Plugin at this blog.

I’m hoping for more suggestions by the way.

I was pleased to see that a few visitors immediately noticed the value of the plugin. Hey, what better way to report sites that have become splogs to Google than for bloggers who previously linked to that site to switch all their old backlinks to “nofollow”? (Hhmmm… maybe Google should pay me to make this easy to use? Somehow, I don’t think they will!)

Anyway, enough of me complimenting my own idea and trying to guilt Google into paying me! :)

I’d love suggestions for improvements. In the meantime, here are the suggestions I’ve received:

Andy Beard suggested an administrative interface to let users add and delete the domains that are “nofollowed” by the plugin. I plan to do that, but due to my lack of knowledge about WordPress, it will require a bit of calendar time.

WebStractions asked if my “NoOldSpamLinks” plugin would work for comments too. It didn’t yesterday; it does now!

While extending the plugin to cover comments, I also thought about how “evil” commenters who want to get around the plug-in might do so. I added a bit of logic to make “nofollow” insertion case insensitive. Version 2 of NoOldSpamLinks Plugin. Basic instructions: Open, copy, paste, save with ‘.php’ extension. Edit if you wish. Upload to Wordpress plugins folder, activate.

Since the idea for the plugin popped into my head only yesterday, I may need to think of other things “evil” commenters might do to interfere with the “nofollow” addition. If you think of something, go to my first post and try adding a “follow” link to http://johnchow.com using any trick you can trick you can think of. (Spaces? Weird html? Whatever.)

Still, ultimately, the blogger can delete comments, so I’m not to worried. But I’d prefer the plugin just flat out worked.

I’ll be mostly just thinking about features for the next week. If you’d like to use the plugin, it’s here: Version 2 of NoOldSpamLinks Plugin.

Meanwhile, if you have suggestions for features or modifications, let me know. If I think the add lots of value and can figure out how to code them, I’ll put them on my list of features to have in Version 1.0- which will be the first truly user friendly version (meaning it will have the administrative interface!)Tags:

I’m new to WordPress myself. I heard that there are many plug-in and stuff that makes WP highly customizable but I am not that adventurous!
