Andy Beard Wants Dramatic Titles: Just Like Muhamed Saleem’s.

September 26th, 2007

Andy Beard is hankering for titles like Muhammad Saleem uses to lure in StumbleUpon traffic:

Muhammad Saleem’s Title

Notice the title is centered, and there is a break after the colon?

I suspect it can be done with CSS, but I’m wretched at that. So, I wrote a plugin called Nifty Titles. :)

Other features

  1. Doesn’t add the break in the feed. (Or at least it didn’t at my test blog.)
  2. Only shows in the page title.
  3. As far as I can tell, doesn’t screw anything up.
  4. Right now breaks on the “:” only. I could code a “candy” to give authors more control and/or permit breaking on “?”.

Will this lure in StumbleUpon Traffic? Tell me what you think.

Note: After clicking publish, I notice this does something ugly in the admin panel. That will be easy to fix in the morning. In the meantime, if you have suggestions about breaking on “?” or “!” or anything else, let me know. It’s easy to do.

Update: I modified to a) fix the ugliness in the admin panel, add a after the first “:”, “?” or “!” but only break if there are at least 20 characters before the punctuation. (I want something easy to use that doesn’t ever look stupid.)

Psst… Alexa Rank Secret Revealed!

September 26th, 2007

Today, I will reveal the real secret of getting a great Alexa rank. I discovered when I found scrapers sites in my inbound links!

Mind you, no one is scraping my blog; they are scraping “How to Boost Your Alexa Rank”, published at “Alexa: Web Discover Machine “, a blog written by a couple of fellows who work for Alexa and discuss nothing but Alexa.

That post linked Skyrocket Alexa and that link now appears at a quality blog that looks like this:

Scraped Site

Maybe I should email that blogger and ask him which affiliate programs he uses? Cause’ I bet I could make money with a big Skype ad too!

Now for the secret to boosting Alexa!

Now, I’m pretty sure almost no one would intentionally visit that blog. But, I noticed the scraped blog has an Alexa rank of 265,915.

Many bloggers running sponsored posts would love that type of rank.

Recent ReadersHow did the scraper site achieve that? Well, here’s my theory:

See that gal wearing the red cape? I know she’s got an Alexa toolbar installed. And the Asian guy in the black turtleneck? I bet he has an Alexa toobar installed. Heck, I bet everyone of those visitors have toolbars installed! :)

I suspect the real secret to boosting your Alexa rank: Scrape blogs with good Alexa ranks.

Heck, you probably don’t need to scrape them. Just link ‘em regularly. Their Alexa toolbar totin’ authors will stop by and give your Alexa a nice bump.

DealDotCom Plugin

September 25th, 2007

if ( function_exists( 'dealdotcom' ) ) {
dealdotcom();
}
?>

I’m testing theDealDotCom Plugin Beta Bluefur is in the process of developing. It looks like it will be a great plugin, but currently, I seem to be experiencing “issues”.

I’m posting to let the developers see the image I’m seeing.

As you can see on my blog, the images is generic. I’m under the impression the plugin is supposed to locate today’s deal and price, and display it. (I eventually plan to post some logic to only display this in the morning- when the deal is unlikely to have sold out. Later on, I’ll replace with other ads.)

When I update manually, I get this error:

Warning: file_get_contents() [function.file-get-contents]: URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in /home/.xxxx/xxxx/money.bigbucksblogger.com/wp-content/plugins/dealdotcom/dealdotcom.php on line 74

Warning: file_get_contents(http://www.dealdotcom.com/wp) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found in /home/.xxx/xxxx/money.bigbucksblogger.com/wp-content/plugins/dealdotcom/dealdotcom.php on line 74

Evidently, my host won’t let me do
$output = file_get_contents($url);

I read there is a workaround because many hosts don’t permit “file_get_contents”. I’d be happy to insert the workaround for myself, but if lots of others bloggers are having this trouble, maybe the plugin should be modified?

Great plugin idea though. :)
