Ten Google Page Rank Haikus

October 26th, 2007

An advertiser paid Venomous Kate to run a haiku contest mentioning Google. Naturally I entered! Then, I wrote more haikus.

Google Bomb Haiku
Dave Airey’s contest
created a Google bomb
then he diffused it.

Google vs. Andy Haiku
Google slapped Andy:
Sponsored posts are a no-no
even if they’re good.

Page Rank Zero Haiku
Google ranks dancing.
My page rank is still zero,
though I have back links.

‘Bot food Haiku
Content for people
that’s what Google says it wants.
(Don’t forget sitemaps.)

Zen Master Haiku
Does Page Rank matter?
Zen master, Maki, says no;
meanwhile, others fret.

Google Joke Haiku
Is page rank a joke?
Many bloggers are laughing;
others are sobbing.

Bad neighborhood Haiku
Vlad says don’t link me.
I’m in a bad neighborhood.
your rank could get slashed!

Nofollow Haiku
Blog with abandon!
But never post a paid link
(without nofollow.)

Google Page Rank Haiku
Google rules the net.
I watch my page rank tumble;
My tears fall like rain.

Matt Cutts Haiku
Matt Cutts of Google,
mysteriously silent.
Please, explain it all!

Improve Your Better Feed: Wordpress Plugin

October 25th, 2007

Do you want to find a way to improve your feed be a great way to get good traffic, (possibly) attracting more Diggs, and Stumbles? Well, why not add a link to comments, the blog post, and to any social networks they might wish to click?

You can do this fairly easily using Better Feed, which improves your feed in a number of ways. It automatically

  1. Adds a permalink to your post at the bottom of the feed.
  2. Adds a link to comments to the bottom of the feed.
  3. Adds links to categories at the bottom of the feed and
  4. Adds links to Technorati.

It also permits you, the blogger to add additional html text.

My knitting blog displays a footer that almost matches the default; I replaced some paragraph breaks with line breaks. This is what the footer on the feed of my knitting blog as displayed in Google Reader.

Are you saying “Big deal”? Well, the link to comments, in particular, can encourage some regular visitors to come to the blog to post their own comment.

I’d show you the BigBucksBlogger footer, but the feed exists only after I hit “publish”, the Google reader only displays the new feed a little later. (The time delay is a bit inconvenient if you edit, since you’ll need to publish, then read your footer. Plus, the feed services can be stubborn about updated- which is why some of you may see typos in the footer today! But.. oh well. :) )

$string=' << $string2='FEEDFOOT;';
?>

How can you customize the footer?

First, you don’t need to customize. The default footer is already terrific. But if you want to add or remove things to the footer, you should look for the bit of code that falls between ‘‘ and ‘FEEDFOOT;’

Start by adding html you’d like to appear after the “Technorati” link. Then examine your footer, and you can start to move things around.

Over the next few days, I’ll be adding appropriate links to encourage people to add my post to social networks. When I figure that out, I’ll let you know how to do it! :)

Kontera Control for WP 2.3: Feel Free To Test!

October 25th, 2007

An updated version of Kontera Control for WP 2.3 is working on my two test blogs, my diet blog and here:

  1. Test blog 1: uses WP 2.2.3. I activated widgets on the sidebar, and it’s currently displaying the “Raindrops” theme.
  2. Test blog 2: uses WP 2.3; it’s currently displaying a weird version of my normal theme. (The oddities have nothing to do with the plugin.)

Notes:
Tricia had trouble with the version I emailed her. Maybe I attached something other than what I thought was the final version? (I sometimes click “save” and end up with extra copies in odd folders on my mac.) So to avoid issues with email snafus, I zipped the version that is actually running right here on my blog. You can down load by clicking Kontera Control for WP 2.3

To use: Download Kontera Control for WP 2.3, unzip. Upload to plugins. Deactivate old version of Kontera control. Activate this version. If you like, visit the Options page and adjust options. Look at blog to see if the plugin is working.

I think there should be no problems. However, until at least a few people other than me have tested, ya’ never know. If you experience any problems, please copy the error message and send it to me. The precise words in the gooble-dy-gook message help me. (Knowing there are no words helps too.)

After that, just deactivate this version and reactivate the old one.

Changes

Changes compared to old version:

  1. Fixed a bug that occurred when widgets were used. That bug made Kontera Control think posts were comments.
  2. Found a few formatting issues on the control page.
