Smorty.com has an offer for bloggers:
Get paid for blogging. Write your opinion about peoples products, services and websites on your blog.
Yay! Another pay to blog option! But, sadly, it turned out I “screwed up” in one of my first steps of setting up the blog. Luckily, I can adapt quickly.
So, what was my “screw up” and how do I fix it? Well, I established a domain name that won’t qualify for Smorty. So, I’m going to change it. It’s easy to do. Let me first explain why I need to change and then how I need to change.
Why Change: To qualify for Smorty.
Reading Smorty’s FAQS we learn that many of their key requirements are similar to those of other pay to blog services. As with PayPerPost or Sponsored Revies, your blog must be indexed by Google and Yahoo, it must be older than 3 months, you need to average at least 2 new posts a week and there can be no violent, hate related or adult content.
So far so good! I started “Big Bucks Blogger” on April 28, 2007, so it would appear to be on track to join both PayPerPost and Smorty on July 28, 2007.
But, then I looked at the rules 3 and found a hitch:
You can only apply for a blogger account with a root domain. e.g. www.domain.com you can not use www.domain.com/myblog, however you can use subdomains e.g. www.myblog.domain.com
Ok, well I’d installed my WordPress software in a subdirectory; that meant its domain was http://www.bigbucksblogger.com/blog. That wasn’t going to fly with Smorty!
Putting my thinking cap on, I realized that if one pay to blog service has this new, unique requirement, others may soon adopt the requirement. Luckily, I learned about this now while my blog is new and doesn’t yet qualify for any pay to blog program!
As you can see, I fixed the issue. “Big Bucks Blogger’s” new domain is http://money.bigbucksblogger.com!
How To Change!
Fixing was easy: my web hosting service, Dreamhost, permits me an unlimited number of subdomains, and I was able to create money.bigbucksblogger.com with one click. If your hosting service doesn’t provide this service, well… you may be stuck. At least you’ll be able to qualify for PPP or other pay to post programs that exclude blogs in subdirectories.
Once I created the subdomain, it existed instantly so I copied over my WordPress installation to the new subdirectory. Then, I just changed the both the “WordPress Address” and “Blog Address” in the WordPress General Options panel to “money.bigbucksbogger.com” (they had been “www.bigbucksblogger.com/blog”. )
Voila! New domain:http://money.bigbucksblogger.com.
Then, just in case the search engines sent me two or three visitors, I installed a 301 redirect in my bigbucksblogger.com/blog directory so that the 2 or 3 hits I might get a day at that address go to the new address. Not a big deal! (Note: This can be a big deal if you have an established blog.)
Now that I’ve changed this domain, I should qualify to apply to both Smorty, Pay Per Post and many other pay for blogging schemes on August 7, 2007. If I’d set up a subdiretory in the first place, I’d qualify on July 28.
But you know, that’s ten days lost!
Well, now we are reminded why it’s a good idea to pick your permanent domain name correctly in the first place! Oh well. Since this blog is pretty much brand new, at least I didn’t lose traffic, Google rank or any significant number of backlinks!
